On Earth Day, April 22, 2010, the Town of Montreal West and Compost Montreal unveiled an innovative and unique neighbourhood composting program.
Strategically, several drop off stations were established throughout the Town - in parks and in other public spaces - where nearby residents can drop off their organic matter, in a large bin. Compost Montreal comes by once a week to empty the bins, and also cleans and maintains them.
Residents must sign up to the program in order to use the bins, which are locked in order to avoid contamination. The program has generated a very positive response both among citizens, as well as among city administrators.
This type of program provides citizens with an effective solution to composting their organic matter without the expense and logistical complications of citywide door-to-door collection. The program is easily adaptable on a borough-to-borough basis, and represents the near-term future of municipally-organized compost collection on the Island of Montreal.
